Elder abuse is defined as by the World Health Organization as: “a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person”

Elder abuse can:

  • Take place in the home, other residential settings or in the community
  • Be caused by family, friends, paid care providers, landlords, staff or any person in a position of trust and authority

With an increasingly aging population, it is important that seniors and their families are aware of the warning signs of elder abuse and the resources available to protect seniors from abuse.
